Abstract

The quality of education and its importance is a recurring theme in specialized literature. In general, the studies seek to identify its main determinants, which can be divided into individual, family and relative to the structure of schools. Regarding the school structure, violence is one of the factors capable of affecting the quality of teaching, being represented by the students' grades in standardized tests. In this sense, this work has as main objective to analyze the effect of violence in schools on the performance of students of the 3rd year of high school in Brazil. Through hierarchical modeling for the year 2017, it was observed that violence negatively impacted student performance. This result highlights the importance of projects capable of reducing failures, in addition to policies aimed at the family, impacting the training of those responsible, generating income and, consequently, reducing violence in schools.
