The Tocantins stands out as the main grains producer in the northern region of the country and has importance in the new Brazilian agricultural frontier. The objective of this article was to analyze the increase the production of grains in the state and break it down in the efects: harvested area, yield and location, used the shift-share model. Subsequently, the area effect was subdivided into scale effect and substitution effect. Yield and area efects were important for increasing grain production of Tocantins in the period and subperiods. The crops that contributed to the increase in grain production were rice, corn and soybeans. The Jalapão, Rio Formoso, Porto Nacional and Miracema microregions have a greater impact on state production. The State has the potential to continue expanding its production, but for such an investment in infrastructure of the agroindustrial system; transportation logistics, technologies, training and capacitation for producers.
